ABOUT THE PODCAST

The job seemed like a brilliant career move. The money was great, the 'culture' my new company spoke of was something to admire, and the things the leadership team said they stood for were admirable. I even got that coveted VP role I had been seeking! All of this rang true until my first few weeks on the job.

And then the rose-colored glasses came off, and I needed to get out.

I should have suspected something, but the free-flowing, no-cost food in the kitchen, the shuffleboard table in the lobby, and the extensive library of leadership and culture books had me at hello. So when you add these to the title I wanted (and money to match), this would be a perfect place. And then the rose-colored glasses came off, and I needed to get out.

But, considering I was just a few weeks into my new role, I couldn't leave. The growing tension between my feelings and my desire to honor my commitment led to incredible anxiety. How would I stay engaged in a company full of bad leaders and a swell of terrible company culture? What could I do? Could I improve it? Was it a lost cause? Was I going to get sucked into the chaos? Is this good for my health? How would I get out?

It took me nearly three years to move on, but my life improved virtually overnight when I did.

The thing is that in a bad environment, blaming others is the easiest thing to do. After all, I worked for a company with a bad culture and poor leadership. These problems were their fault, not mine. It was that simple, wasn't it? Not really. Nothing is that simple. I took the job and didn't see the issues until I started my new role.

When I left that job, I realized how important the intangibles were. I had a great deal of curiosity about what went wrong, and I wanted answers:

  • How do I not make this same mistake again?

  • How do I not get sucked into the title, money, prestige, etcetera?

  • How do I find this stuff out before accepting the job next time?

  • What could I learn from the last three years?

  • And how could I share these lessons with others?
